Wushu and Kung Fu
What is Wushu Kung Fu?Wushu is a Mandarin Chinese word that literally means “martial arts.” It includes barehand and weapons routines performed with a level of speed, power, skill, and grace matched by no other martial art in the world. Kung fu literally means “work requiring time, effort, and dedication.” The most famous name in wushu kung fu is Shaolin kung fu, but there are hundreds of styles in existence.
Our Basic ProgramIn our beginning program, every student begins by learning the basics of wushu barehand routines. We gradually introduce running, calisthenics, and stretching to improve your health and fitness. We also introduce basic stances, strikes, kicking, and leaping techniques. Our curriculum is closely based on the current ones in China, such as that of the Beijing Sport University’s Wushu Department. Our curriculum then allows you to focus on routines or forms (sets of
choreographed movements) or sparring and self-defense. You may also choose
to learn both.
Our forms curriculum will carry you through all of the basic things you
need to know to become proficient in Chinese martial arts. Our goal is to
make you knowledgeable about the different styles of wushu kung fu, then to
help you focus on wherer you excel. Our sparring curriculum will teach you the punches, kicks, and throws used in sparring competition in addition to self-defense techniques. In both sparring and self-defense, our emphasis is on simplicity, speed, and effectiveness. We will not overwhelm you with a lot of complicated techniques that you will never use anyway. The Wushu Team For students interested in the modern competition and performance scene, we
have a special program, the Wushu Team, consisting of these dedicated
students. Wushu Team members learn the international competition routines
along with group performance routines (including choreographed sparring
routines). Advanced students learn individual routines and weapons such as
the three-section staff, chain whip, and more.
