Become strong, flexible, and fit, and learn to defend yourself -- all at the same time with Chinese kung fu! Each beginning class at Malee’s School consists of a thorough warm-up and stretching, following by training in the fundamentals of kung fu: stances, strikes, kicks, forms, and self-defense.
Due to our students’ differing interests, we now offer two separate kung fu curriculums: Contemporaery Wushu and Traditional Kung Fu.
Malee’s School’s Contemporary Wushu Curriculum is designed for those interested in the modern sport of wushu, with its dazzling speed, jump kicks and tumbling, and weapons training. Younger students wishing to develop high levels of fitness for health and competition will love contemporary wushu. It is also great for older students who are just looking for a great form of exercise that combines flexibility, strength, balance, and fun. Some of our wushu students are in their 40s and 50s! Contemporary Wushu students learn long fist routines along with staff, broadsword, straight sword, and spear.
We also teach a variety of contemporary and traditional barehand routines such as southern boxing; Shaolin; eagle claw; snake; praying mantis; tiger; dragon; and so on. Other weapons taught include the three-section staff; chain whip; southern broadsword and staff; polearm; and more.
Our Traditional Kung Fu Curriculum is aimed at those who would like to follow a more self-defense oriented path. We teach numerous combat applications for all forms, plus joint locking, throws, and grappling techniques. The emphasis is on barehand defense techniques against unarmed and armed opponents. Those interested in the modern full contact sparringn sport of sanshou (also called sanda) will want to take this class.
Traditional Kung Fu students learn Chin Woo style Tan Tui (Spring Legs), plus two additional traditional long fist forms, Lianbuquan and Gongliquan (as taught by Grandmaster Qian Yuanze, 4th generation descendant of Chin Woo and student of the Nanjing Guoshu Institute). Advanced students continue with long fist training and eventually weapons routines.
Students are also welcome to cross-train in both contemporary wushu and traditional kung fu! Maybe you prefer to focus on self-defense, but would like to learn a a sword routine for fun. Or maybe you’ve mastered the splits and butterfly twist, but would like to learn a bit more about self-defense. While advancing in one curriculum, you are more than welcome to try your hand at what your friends are doing.
