2005 USAWKF National Championships

Dear Friends, On August 6th and 7th, 2005, Malee’s School of Tai Chi & Kung Fu and Master Malee Khow hosted the 2005 USAWKF National Championships and U.S. Team Trials at South Windsor High School in South Windsor, Connecticut. Master Khow was tournament director. Although organized with only a few months’ notice, the championships, which was sponsored by the U.S.A. Wushu-Kungfu Federation (USAWKF) and sanctioned by the U.S.A. National Tai Chi Chuan Federation (USANTCCF), attracted over 250 competitors from over twenty schools, and received great praise from athletes, families, and officials alike. In addition to the championships, the U.S. taolu team trials were held at the same time. Seventy-six people joined this event, which selected ten individuals, five male and five female, to represent our country at the 8th World Wushu Championships, which will be held this December in Vietnam. Team trials results can be found at the USAWKF website. Judges serving at the event included: Abdul Abdurrahman, Angela Atwater, Daoyun Chen, Philip Chen, Calvin Chin, George Duong, Mohammadali Khansari Hosseini, Bangjun Jiang, Taso Kalaitzidis, Shirley Ko, Alex Kwok, Darrell Levack, Randy K. Li, Mei Lu, Xiaolin Lu, Justin Ma, Paul Nardelli, Sam Ng, Adrian Niu, C.P. Ong, James Posniewski, Qian Sang, Anguang Sun, Tao Wang, Susan White, Tat-Mau Wong, Buddy Wu, Qian Xue, and Hongchao Zhang. The Chief Judge was Professor Ruiqi Zhu (Beijing, China), and the Vice Chief Judge was Professor Tongwei Liu (Shanghai, China). Mr. Anthony Goh, USAWKF President, was the Honorary Chairperson. The Organizing Committee Vice Chairperson was Ms. Angela Atwater. The Organizing Committee consisted of: Ms. Christine Ashe, Mr. Basia Caya, Mr. Kris Caya, Mr. Somchai Khow, Ms. Olivia Luong, Mr. Richard Preston, Ms. Christina Roberts, Mr. Anthony F. Roberts, Ms. Stephanie Sum, Mr. David White, Ms. Susan White, and Mr. Jeff Zhu. The media advisor was Ms. Gigi Oh (Kungfu Tai Chi Magazine). Website design was done by Ms. Suzanne Mamet (Three Tree LLC). The videographer was Mr. Timothy A. Rodrigues (Grand Wushu Productions). The photographer was Mr. C.P. Loh. It was an exciting two days, filled not only with top-notch competitions but also wonderful individual and group performances during the Opening Ceremony on Saturday morning and the Masters Performances on Saturday evening. Performers included: Professor Zhu Ruiqi (Beijing Sports University), Profesor Liu Tongwei (Shanghai Sports Institute), Master Abdul Abdurrahman (Maryland), Master Calvin Chin (Massachusetts), Master Qichen Guo (California), Master Bangjun Jiang (Maryland), Master Sam Ng (Illinois), Master C.P. Ong (Maryland), Master J. Teasley (New York), Master Tao Wang (Texas), Master Buddy Wu (Ohio), Master DagangYuan (NJ), Master Hongchao Zhang (Illinois). Group performances were given by Calvin Chin’s Martial Arts Academy (Massachusetts), Capital District Tai Chi & Kung Fu Association (New York), Malee’s School of Tai Chi & Kung Fu (Connecticut), and Tat Wong Kung Fu Academy (Connecticut). In addition to the championships and team trials, the week before was filled with a very important event, the 1st National Wushu Instructors and Judges Courses, the first of its kind in the United States. These courses were organized by the USANTCCF and sponsored by the USAWKF. Among other things, the courses taught the new rules which will be used at the 8th World Wushu Championships and at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, if wushu is accepted as an event. Master Malee Khow directed the event, while Professor Zhu Ruiqi of the Beijing Sports University and Professor Liu Tongwei of the Shanghai Sports Institute taught the courses, which were held at the Vernon Quality Inn in Vernon, Connecticut. Seventeen students graduated the courses: Angela Atwater (CT), James Jianqiu Cao (CA), Barbara L. Chan (CT), Calvin Chin (MA), George Duong (CA), Qichen Guo (CA), Mohammadali Khansari Hosseini (FL), Bangjun Jiang (MD), Randy K. Li (KS), Paul Nardelli (MA), James Posniewski (NY), Anthony F. Roberts (CT), Anguang Sun (CA), Yanhua Wang (NY), Susan A.White (CT), Teresa Wong (CO), and Qian Xue (MA). A special thanks to everyone (members of the organizing committee, volunteers, judges, and everyone else) who made the events possible, and congratulations to all the competitors.
